What to Expect

Beachside physical therapy is a PT owned outpatient clinic that provides high quality care for clients of all age ranges and diagnoses. The goal of an internship at Beachside is to provide a student with a full range of experiences in an outpatient setting. The student will see a variety of musculoskeletal, neurological, and even pediatric cases. The first step is to set the student up with a clinical instructor who will initially orient the student to the clinic. The student first couple of weeks will entail of shadowing the instructor or other clinicians and assisting these clinicians in the care of patients. During this time, the student will also become familiar with the documentation. Beachside has very high standards for their documentation which will truly help a student to express their treatment in writing. Function is priority number one when documenting. Beachside is up to date in all documentation guidelines and requirements. As the student gains confidence, the student then will begin to grow their own caseload. This is done by observing other clinicians performing evaluations and then performing evaluations with supervision until evaluations are done independently. The student then will continue the treatment plan by treating these patients through their course of care.

The student will then be performing re-evaluations and eventually discharges for these patients. The goal is to have the student seeing 10-12 patients maximum by the end of the internship. By keeping the visits low, the student will be able to utilize their skills and learn new skills through other skilled clinical staff. Beachside emphasizes manual therapy and has built its reputation on using manual therapy to be a large part of care.

Beachside will also provide the student the opportunity to observe surgeries. Due to our relationship with area physicians students can view surgeries ranging from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction to total joint replacements. This experience will allow the student to ask questions of the physician and learn about the surgical aspect of their patient loads.

At the end of the fieldwork experience, the student will have the confidence to pursue a career in the outpatient setting. The student will demonstrate excellent documentation skills and be familiar with all types of diagnoses from an outpatient perspective.
